After testing several management tools, our lab started developing an online platform for Fab Lab management. The two main resources to be managed are: users and equipment. They are very related, but none of the previous tools was able to make this link effectively. A solution to book equipment, give qualifications to a member, manage his membership and grant access to a machine was needed. The idea was to create an open-source user account system and add some loosely coupled modules like qualifications, sales or checkin. This development pattern allows a great modularity and lots of customization. The aim of the team is to share the tool that could be used in others fablab without any additional development tasks. As this system is developed for a Fab Lab by a Fab Lab team, only essential features, adapted for this usage are there. The main asset of the tool is qualification management, linked to physical access control of lab equipment. It allows a fine-grained and secure way to provide access to every machine of the lab. The fact that only qualified users can unlock machines allows an unmatched level of safety and greater autonomy of members. The tool also allows very detailed management of the reservation of equipment, it therefore allows a maximum availability of equipment to the benefit of the satisfaction of members. The sale and billing system is straightforward and clear both user and facilitator side. Therefore, the consumables management is very efficient and members can get them instantly, thanks to the month-end billing system. Last but not least, the platform helps to strengthen the sense of community within the lab through the system of groups and project sharing. The goal of our participation in your event would be to present the benefits of our tool to other Fab Lab managers and to expand the user community of this opensource software entirely focused on fablab’s resources and users management.
